First Inversion's "Holding On Through Song: Exploring the African-American Spiritual"

  • Lyric Theatre 440 East Ave. Rochester, NY 14697 (map)

First Inversion presents a unique experience, combining improvisation in the oral tradition with written arrangements of African-American spirituals for various configurations of choir, soloists, instrumentalists, and the gathered community. The singers of First Inversion are joined by guest artists Jason Holmes, Marcus Jefferson, Alan Jones, and Kearstin Piper-Brown. Words from Rochester’s own Frederick Douglass and other African-American leaders, scholars, and artists will provide historical context and sacred story that will inform our journey with this powerful music.
